While industry standards, or guidelines and goals, are established in different sports and entertainment industries research is necessary to identify and determine industry norms (expectations) and trends (the newest and latest demands and response of consumers) in the sports and entertainment industries. Industry norms provide examples of what to expect for attendance, revenue, length of events, and other important factors for sports and entertainment industries. Industry trends are often used as the basis of marketing strategies for businesses.

PART 1
Use the Internet to study the current trends of your favorite sport or other form of entertainment. List 5 current industry trends for that sport or form of entertainment.

Here are a few websites to help you get started. Based on your research in PART 1 think of a marketing strategy you would use to react to one of the trends. Write a memo to your marketing manager identifying the 5 current trends that you found, identify and explain the trend you are reacting to, your idea, and why your idea is a desirable response to the trend.

Marketing Strategies:

General Strategies: Market Expansion
With this strategy marketers look to grow overall sales in one of two ways:
• Grow Sales with Existing Products – With this approach the marketer seeks to actively increase the overall sales of products the company currently markets. This can be accomplished by:
1. getting existing customers to buy more
2. getting potential customers to buy (i.e., those who have yet to buy)
3. selling current products in new markets.
• Grow Sales with New Products – With this approach the marketer seeks to achieve objectives through the introduction of new products. This can be accomplished by:
1. introducing updated versions or refinements to existing products
2. introducing products that are extensions of current products
3. introducing new products not previously marketed.

Marketing Strategy Examples:
http://www.gaebler.com/Examples-of-Marketing-Strategies.htm

How to Find a Memo Template

1. Log into your Google account
2. Click on Documents to access Google Docs
3. Click on Templates
4. Almost all societies can agree on some principles such as "don't kill" or "don't steal", buother guidelines can become blurred based on the development and experiences of each individual.

Character development can be divided into 3 stages:

1. Reward vs. Punishment
2. Others Expectations (society)
3. Principles

It is questioned that today's youth may have difficulty developing the later stages of ethical behavior due to a lack of mature adult role models. Exposure to frequent news accounts of unethical behavior by politicians, sports and entertainment figures, and even religious and political leaders may cause a negative view of the value of ethics.

Do poor examples of ethical behavior receive more attention while good examples are ignored? Are there more instances today of unethical behavior or is it just being reported more than in previous decades?

Skim the following 2 articles:

http://izettl.hubpages.com/hub/Reality-TV-Shows-Ruin-Lives

http://www.scotsman.com/news/international/china_plans_reality_check_on_too_entertaining_tv_shows_1_1931071

What role does the media play in our ethical reasoning?

Sports and Entertainment Marketing

OCTOBER 27, 2011

A perception that exists among the general public is that sports and entertainment celebrities no longer value ethics. Ethics are a system of deciding what is right or wrong in a reasoned and impartial manner. Business should be conducted with integrity, trust, and fairness, which are three of the parts that make up the core standards of ethics.

Ethics are an important part of sound business decisions.

Read the following article and respond to the question "Where are the Ethics" posted in your Google Group:

http://www.qualitydigest.com/magazine/2009/may/article/decline-ethical-behavior-business.html

Will consumers continue to deal with businesses they feel are unethical?
